MOPE-1

a sad wavetable synth for the M-VAVE FM-1, playing here from the same C code

Turn your phone sideways for bigger controls.

Off. The sound starts when you switch it on.

The blob

  • The blob is the sound. Its body is the wavetable, its eyes the filter, its mouth the envelope, its tears the delay, the room around it the reverb.
  • Press a part's button: its drawer opens under the blob and the four knobs turn that part. The drawer hides after 3 s, the page stays (its button lit). Press twice: the drawer stays until HOME.
  • Some parts have a second page: press the button again (not twice fast). The caption says so (AGAIN: SHADOW.).
  • HOME body, again shadow (a second oscillator) · EDIT eyes (the filter, its kind and drive) · ENV mouth, again sigh (a second envelope that sweeps the wavetable) · LFO vibe, again tremble (a second LFO) · FX tears · SEL walls · GLO mixer, again setup · ARP held: the arpeggiator · SEQ the loop, again the tape deck.

Playing

  • 27 keys, F3 to G5. OCT− / OCT+ shift them and light up while they're shifted.
  • PRESETS a whole sound (38 of them), ALGORITHM only the wavetable (16 of them), SELECT the drum tape.
  • PLAY the band: thirteen depressing beats, a minor-key bass, your loop. ARP tapped: chords become patterns.
  • REC records into a 1, 2 or 4-bar loop (a bar's count-in when stopped). SEQ: the white keys are its steps; press one and turn NOTE, LEN, VEL; tap it to remove it. HOME + REC undo, SAVE + REC clear.

Here

  • Drag a knob up or down, or scroll on it. Several fingers work on a touch screen. Shift-click or right-click a button to keep it held.
  • White keys Q–I and A–K, black keys 1–0 -. Space play, Enter rec, B arp, Esc home, Z X octave, ↑ ↓ wavetable, ← → drum tape.
  • MIDI in: notes, bend, the mod wheel (the wavetable's position), program change (a preset), CC 74 cutoff, 71 resonance, 73 attack, 72 release, 91 reverb, 93 chorus, 94 delay, 7 volume.

What this is

MOPE-1 by slothpallas: the FM-1 firmware's screen and sound, compiled to WebAssembly and running at the FM-1's 44.1 kHz. It sits on the open FM-1 platform of Felucca. Free software (GPL-3.0): the source.

Put it on your FM-1

Beta, at your own risk. First download M-VAVE's own firmware (FM-1 V15, "PC Firmware" at m-vave.com/download), so you can always go back.

  1. Plug the FM-1 straight into this computer with a USB data cable (no hub). Close other apps that use MIDI.
  2. Use Chrome or Edge; allow MIDI with SysEx when it asks.
  3. Press install and leave the page open while it writes (about a minute). The FM-1 restarts as MOPE-1.

Back to M-VAVE's firmware

Choose the V15 file from M-VAVE's page: it is checked before anything is written, then written back over the same cable. If the FM-1 ever won't start, it comes up in safe mode after two tries and this still works.
